First Chris Sligh admits that he was just trying to make it to the top ten so he could quit his day marketing job and now Howard Stern wants to derail the American Idol. An article in the New York Times by Edward Wyatt brings out some very disturbing news. Or is it just good fun at the expense of Simon Cowell. The story is that Howard Stern has been promoting a web site that suggests that people vote for the worst contestant on American Idol. They had Taylor Hicks on the top of their list last year and he won. They have a picture of him with a VoteForTheWorst T-shirt on the site.

Sanjaya Malakar has the dubious distinction of being on the list this year. That explains why Stephanie Edwards lost out to him. The site is www.votefortheworst.com and Howard Stern has given it a big boost lately. Stern said, “We’re corrupting the entire thing,” on his Sirius Satellite Radio show last Thursday. American Idol has drawn an average of 32 million viewers. I wonder if Howard Stern is as big as he thinks. Sirius Satellite has a total of only 6 million and no one knows how many listen to Howard Stern, maybe 300,000or just 10% of the American Idol audience. I think he has always thought he was bigger than he really is, at least that is what she said.

I believe that Sanjaya Malakar is making it because, as I keep saying, this is not a singing competition, it is a popularity contest. Ashley the little girl that was in tears sums it up and explains it all. Young girls love him, worship him and will scream their heads off for him. They also probably will sit by the phone with an auto re-dial and vote for him a couple hundred times. That is 200 times more votes per person than the average fan. These young girls are a record company’s wet dream because they actually buy albums. Not just downloads but old fashioned $14.95 CDs.

Simon Cowell has said if Sanjaya wins “I won’t be back.” What is he complaining about? This guy will pack them in on the tour and sell a lot of music. They can always fix his voice in the studio like they did for The Beach Boys.
