American Idol: Top 9 contestants. One Goes Home.

So here we are, back as promised before with last night's American Idol Update. The night started with  a group song on Dolly Parton's '9 to 5'. Although the contestants are considered to be seasoned professional singers, still they looked like a bunch of elementary school kids singing at their school's annual festival.

After the kid's show (pardon me, but it did look like one), came the real deal. Last night's theme was Country Music. The solos given by the contestants  made up quite an exciting show,

Broke White:

Her song of choice was, 'Jolene'. Didn't quite sound right and fault of it can be blamed equally upon the backing vocalists as well. Simon had this to say, “ It looked like you were busting you way through the song and I thought all of you looked very odd together, you know, the weird violin player. Someone who is better in the shade. It wasn't one of your better performances."

David Cook:

Song of choice was, 'Little Sparrow'. One of his best performances yet. He's a rocker, yet by successfully finishing this song, he has showed the world his diversity, Simon remarked, “Not as good as last week, but if you can make a song about sparrows sound good, you deserve it."

Ramiele Malubay:

Song of choice was, 'Do I ever cross your mind?'. As usual her song selection has been letting her down and she really needs to make a statement with a great song to keep her going in this race. Judge Randy Jackson said, “I wasn't jumping up and down. It was kinda alright. 6.5 out of 10."

Jason Castro:

Song of choice was, 'Travellin' Thru'. Overall a decent performance by Jason, with a peculiar song selection. Paula Abdul said, “This was one of your strongest performances. You were confident and it was great “

Carly Smithson:

Song of choice was, 'Here you come again'. Can be termed as a better performance than last time. Simon really messed up her night with these remarks, “I thought it was good but not great, Sorry. I also think that you've got to have a word with whoever is dressing you at the moment. You've got to start looking like a star at this point.”

David Archuleta:

Song chosen was, 'Smokey mountain memories'. Another sleepy, boring song from David. However, I guess, Simon doesn't quite agree with our views. He had this to say, “This week, absolutely on the money.”

Kristy Lee Cook:

Song of choice was, 'Coat of many colors'. A stunning performance, keeping in mind that county music is her genre of expertise. Paula said, “You look stunning and you gave a beautiful performance.”

Syesha Mercado:

Song of choice was, 'I will always love you'. Not a great song selection, considering that she's been having a good run in the past few weeks. Unnecessary risk. Simon said, “This is one of the best pop songs ever written. The first part was good. The second part paled by comparison to the Whitney version. It was a good but not fantastic version of the song.”

Michael Johns:

Song of choice was, 'It's all wrong, but it's all right'. Another great performance from Michael, proving that he is going to be a tough contender to beat. Paula said, “They're great melodies, Dolly's amazing, you're a rock-star, a blues star, and you look gorgeous.”

At the end of these great performances, came the time for reality check. That means, time to pick the bottom three.

  1. Ramiele Malubay
  2. Kristy Lee Cook
  3. Brooke White

From these bottom three contestants, one will be sent home tonight. And we'll be back tomorrow with new updates for American Idol.
