Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle in fierce competition for best voice on American Idol.
1 ViewsAmerican Idol turning into two competitions, the American Idol guy’s amateur karaoke ballad singing event and the American Idol girls competitions for American Idol.
If the voting at this point was for best singer and the guys were not protected by gender the final twelve would be mostly girls. While watching Jordin Sparks sing I was thinking this was like watching a different competition in a higher league. Randy Jackson confirmed my thoughts when he said, “It is like a different show when the girls come out.”
I think even Antonella Barba sang better than the best guy last night, and she looks better for sure. Sabrina Sloan did a smoky, heart shaking, love making performance. Paula agreed when she said, “One thing that is consistent with you is you can sing, sing, sing.” Simon also thought she could sing but said, “She needs to inject some personality.”
The comments on Antonella Barba by Simon made a veiled reference to her recent nudity publicity. He said, “You have gone as far as you can go.” He said it nicely saying that she was against some major singers. He complimented her on how well she had handled the recent press. Antonella defended herself saying that the others did have a lot of talent but she was just different. Whatever the discussion I thought Antonella turned in one of her best performances so far.
Haley Scarnato was pretty weak in comparison to the others before her and not even in the running compared to who came after her. Randy thought it did not have pizzazz and no yo, whatever that is. Simon said even worse things something about a high school singing event. Haley made the comment in response, “Clock in, clock out” she went on to say “just doing my job.” That just about summed her song up.
Stephanie Edwards, one of my favorites, came next. I really like her for entertainment value. She sings very well, looks great and I can picture her doing big concerts. Simon agreed saying, “One of the best we’ve got.”
Lakrisha Jones proceeded to out sing Whitney in her own song and make the rest look like local bar talent. Lakrisha has the best voice in the competition challenged only by Melinda. The judges already know this and Simon has loved her from the git-go.
Randy Jackson exclaimed, “Another Great performance by the great Lakrisha.”
Simon Cowell when he hears really great talent knows how to express himself. “Passion, talent, believability, of course the yo factor.” Simon also commented on Lakrishas outfit, “tonight you look beautiful.”
Gina Glockson’s performance was hard for me to judge. I thought it was a little too much but I don’t know how to evaluate that kind of song. The judges liked it because it was the Gina they thought existed but they had not really seen. Randy said, “Finaly the real Gina comes out tonight.” Simon wants her to make it into the final twelve.
American Idol finished up with Melinda Doolittle. She did “I’m a Woman” and made me break out in a great big smile. She has been one of the top two singers in the American Idol competition but she brought a whole new level of energy out tonight. If this is truly a singing competition it will get down to Lakrisha and Melinda. Simon said it best, “You little tiger, I thought we had a pussy cat.” Randy said, “You are ready to go into the studio and make a record.” Records, I think I remember those.
Overall the show was much better than the guys last night. Next week should be a big step up in entertainment value. We will see if this is a singing competition like the judges keep saying or is it a popularity contest. Of course being able to sing like Melinda Doolittle or Lakrisha Jones tends to make them very popular.
