Diana Ross, American Idol, Haley Scarnato, Chris Richardson, Phil Stacey, Lakisha Jones, Blake Lewis, and the other American Idol final twelve sing in the first night of the competition.

Brandon Rogers mailed in his performance and it was lost in the mail. Then Melinda Doolittle  brought the whole act together. Simon thought Melinda Doolittle made a boring song exciting and reminds him of Glady Knight.

We thought the top twelve had made it to this part of the show but Brandon reverted to not knowing the words, not singing well and performing like the auditions. Melinda Doolittle came on stage as a star and is flawless. Paula loses it, Simon breaks up laughing.

Diana Ross wanted Gina Glocksen to prenunciate, I think she meant enunciate. Gina enunciated the words very well and sang them great. I did not agree with Randy or Paula.

Very hard to sing Diana Ross hits and make them unique and better than we all know. Sanajaya Malakar is a surprise for the top twelve. His hair looks better, he turned in the best performance he has done yet. Randy did not like it, I did.

Haley sings “I’m Missing You” a song Diana Ross recorded after Mrvin Gaye’s death. Diana thought Haley Scarnato had a recording studio voice. She means it is not big and meant for live onstage performances. Haley did an entertaining live rendition on stage. She tended to get flat when she pushed to get volume. Paula and Randy slammed her and Simon thought it was not that bad and he remembered her name.

Phil Stacey said he was going to come out much more confident, he started weak but then got going. Randy thought he got the boy’s award for the night for vocals. Paula thought it should be a more up-tempo song. Simon thought it was right.

Lakisha Jones, Kee Kee, does a Billie Holiday song “God Bless the Child” a song she has never done before. By far the best of the night, she even out sang Melinda Doolittle. Randy thought she was “sensational.” Simon thinks she has “Got it.” He went to say outstanding.

Blake Lewis bring a sixties song up to date and making it 2007 “You Keep Me Hanging On” making it his own. He had Paula up and dancing, a first for the night. Best male singer of the night. Thank goodness he did not do what Randy and Simon said about leaving the classics be the classics. Blake Lewis is not a Motown looking artist.

“Love Hangover” is Stephanie Edwards’ disco song Diana Ross did as her choice for the night. I think she might of beat Melinda Doolittle in tonight’s competition. She looks great and I loved the song. Paula was up and dancing again, a good sign.

Chris Richardson singing “The Boss” and working the audience like Diana Ross suggested. He is in the top two for the male singers for the night. Once again Simon says it is a singing competition, it is not, it is a popularity contest based on votes. Chris Richardson will get the votes.

“If We Hold on Together” was Jordin Sparks’ song for the night. She came across like it was a musical not a singing concert. Nice voice but lacking energy and entertainment value like Chris Richardson had. Randy thinks Jordan Sparks makes it a three girl race. Simon thought, “It was a very, very good vocal.”

Blake and Chris probably will be the guys to make it the furthest make it.

Who will lose next, Brandon or Haley?
