Top 9 Finalists declared in American Idol

Thursday’s elimination night had everyone on the edge of their seats, although the results were not completely unpredictable. The long drawn out show, saw the ouster of Michael Sarver, who had failed to draw any positive comments for his performance on Wednesday.

This was Sarver’s second week figuring in the bottom two. Perhaps his giving the Motown tour a go-by could have made the difference with most of his competitors seeming to draw inspiration from the theme. Accompanying him in the bottom three were Scott MacIntyre and Matt Giraud. Matt had bad luck with his act on "Let’s Get It On" failing to impress voters although he got high marks from the judges, while Scott MacIntyre gave a not-so-great performance with his rendition of "Can’t Hurry Love."

Megan Joy, the blonde from Utah, survived an intensely critiqued performance, in which she sang the Stevie Wonder song "For Once in My Life”. Stevie who was present, also took the stage to perform a medley of his other hits and a new song, "All About the Love Again", which included shouting out – "I love you Barack Obama!" and "It’s all about positivity”, in the middle of his performance.

To maintain the element of suspense, judges kept everyone waiting. It was a long while before Giraud was declared safe.

Duing his final act, a last chance option, Sarver sang his own version of “Thursday”, but the judges decided to stick to their decision. The 27 year-old oil rigger will still be part of the Idol’s summer tour called “American Idol Live”.

Top 9 finalists now consist of Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Scott MacIntyre, Lil Rounds, Megan Joy Corkrey, Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai. Meanwhile, the show has reached new levels of popularity attracting more than 36 million votes in its eighth season.
