Warning Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince spoiler, but if you have read the book you know what happens anyway.

Don’t be late for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince because it starts out dark and powerful. While full of plenty of magical action and drama the content has matured with the ages of the original audiences. Love interests change faster than a magical dueling match exchanging spells. Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) falls for infatuated Lavender Brown (Jessie Cave), leaving Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) jilted and in a jealous rage. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) has his own love triangle, when Ron’s sister, Ginny (Bonnie Wright), starts dating another student with him, as Ron complains to Harry that he is “Running his hands all my sister.”

Hermione unleashes some magic in response to being jilted by Ron and she also gives some scathing looks that no man wishes to see from a woman. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince explores the pain of being dumped by your first love and what happens when forced to face these changes. Some of the girls come across as down right randy in their obsession with the boys. Even the broomsticks in the Quidditch match have changed to have a bawdy phallic look. As Ron so aptly states in one scene, “These girls are going to kill me!” yes the movie includes lots of scenes of the older more mature Hogwarts students sneaking away to dark, secluded parts of the castle for some intense Snogging. By the end of the film all the right lovers are back together with each other a little wiser and more experienced.

The story of course is about the Half Blood Prince and Harry finds an old Potions book with copious notes that was previously owned by him. The true owner is reveled when Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) turns and says to Harry, “How dare you use my own spells on me. Yes I am the Dark Blood Prince.” This after Snape has killed Dumbledore (Michael Gambon), because Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) cannot perform in his opportunity to be a true dark wizard. He was lowering his wand when Snape steps in to deliver the final curse that trhows Dumbledore off the ramparts of the Hogwarts castle.

Much of the story revolves around Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) a professor who “collects” star pupils as he collects magical ingredients. Horace has many sides and Harry is charged by Dumbledore to extract a hidden memory of Tom Riddle. Harry manages to do this by being lucky, the luck produced by a luck potion, when Horace and Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) get drunk together.

After much dueling, both magical and sexual, the movie stops in mid-story. We will need to wait until the Fall of 2010 to see the three of them go on a quest to find the remaining parts of Tom Riddles soul.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is 153 minutes long, it could be slightly shorter if they shortened the dead spider scene and tightened up some edits. It does drag a little in spots, but the time is used to delve into the charecters a little more so it is not so bad.

I saw this private advanced screening at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach thanks to an invitation by NetJets. He brought us a unique and thrilling form of entertainment that carried us away form our worries and problems. From childhood he was driven to be great: first by his father and then by his own inner need for perfection.

This continued in his memorial services at the Staples center in Los Angeles. What a magnificent service/performance it was, the costumes, the talent and the singing where fantastic. His daughter was a spark of reality when she broke down and said she loved him.

Facts: Michael Jackson had 47 solo singles on the Billboard singles chart, 13 number one singles that hit number 1, he sold 61 and half million albums and Thriller was on the top of the U.S. Charts for 37 weeks. His comeback was already in full swing with 85 million dollars in ticket sales for his planned 50-concert run at London’s 02 theater.

The press has forgiven him, the fans love him and we will be lifted by his music for the rest of our lives. Watching the memorial services I was truly moved.

Based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup’s 2005 novel “Q and A,” Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” is a classic rags-to-riches story about a young boy from the slums, who wins millions in a quiz show and elevates himself in society. The British drama film was written by Simon Beaufoy, and directed by Danny Boyle. The film is a mixture of English and Hindi dialogues.

Slumdog Millionaire was set and filmed in India in the slums of Mumbai. But ask director Danny Boyle, ‘Is it an Indian film?” The incredible director would come up with the answer that the film is based on Vikas Swarup’s book Q and A, and shot entirely in India, but it is a British film, since the $15 million film was financed in London. But the film’s co-director, as well as casting director Loveleen Tandan, who is an Indian, once declared that ‘It is totally an Indian film.’

Interestingly, Boyle, who captured the real picture of Mumbai slums, had never been to India before signing on to direct the screenplay written by Beaufoy. But, Loveleen Tandan had been his moral compass and anchor throughout the project.

“Before I arrived in Mumbai I read Suketu Mehta’s marvelous book ‘The Maximum City’,” Boyle said. “But even then I had to find out a million things about Mumbai. And it was very important that I did not get things wrong.” Loveleen was always there with helpful suggestions and warnings about how some things aren’t looking alright.”
Slumdog was an ultimate experience for its makers. They adopted a rare approach to reach under the skin of Mumbai slums. Tandan says she likes to get as close to reality as possible, and this very intense enthusiasm drove her to the slums of East Bandra, where she found two young children who resembled the protagonists in the story.

“I was very keen to get real slum kids, which is why I convinced them (the producers) to do one-third of the scenes in Hindi. I made a scratch tape with real street kids. The team was surprised that Hindi actually made it brighter and more alive,” said Tandan. Two of the child actors were plucked from a desperately poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Mubai. Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, age 10, and Ruboma Ali, 9, were flown to Los Angeles for the ceremony.

Indeed, Boyle realized that they needed to adapt to the freewheeling working style of the Indian crew. Certainly, Slumdog does not feel like a foreign film. Of course, it has a significant touch of Indian music by maestro A.R. Rahman.

Everything about Slumdog is so alluring, which appeals to everyone. Most parts of the film was shot on small digital cameras by the director himself, so that he could capture the environment’s immediacy while enabling the crew to move through neighborhoods with little disruption.

“You’ve got a script you’re going to shoot, but you try and make the decisions on the day,” Boyle said. “It doesn’t always work, but when it does work, that’s the best bit, when you feel something new that you’d never thought of before.”

Slumdog Millionaire takes the audience on a journey into the heart of Indian port city Mumbai. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards, and eventually won eight, marking the second most Oscar-winning film in this decade. It also won five Critics’ Choice Awards, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards.
Once fed the riders saddled up and prepared to bring the cattle to the Orange County Fair. They would drive them down Placentia, across Victoria and then down Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa. Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa is a very busy street with a large number of car dealerships and retail stores. The traffic was kept under control by the Costa Mesa Police on motorcycles, some with horns on and one officer in a cow suit.

The Orange County Fair food services served up some great grub and everyone went home after an experience they will never forget. I headed out to rest up for the Alan Jackson concert that night.
