California Bluetooth Law

Do you live in California? Do you have a car? Do you use your cell phone in the car (silly question, I know)? Do you have your Bluetooth ready?

If you don’t, the first ticket will cost you $20, then $50 every time after.

For once, this is a law I can firmly stand behind. There are so many times that I have been stuck behind someone sitting at a green light cause they aren’t paying any attention, yakking about the newest gossip to someone on the other end of the phone. Or swerving into my lane, not realizing that they aren’t in control of their car because they are too entranced with sending their text messages. Hopefully it will help, but sadly, I don’t see it doing too much good…

Olympic Sailing Trials Results for Finns

Olympic sailing trials results from the 2008 Olympic Finn sailing trials. Zach Railey from Clearwater, Flordia will be going to the Olympics for the Finn sailing event. After sailing in a wide variety of unexpected conditions Zach Railey made his acceptance speech at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Zach talked about how his decision to use a coach after not placing first in the last trials made all the difference in his recent win. The word around the host Newport Harbor Yacht Club was that Zach could come home from the 2008 Olympics with a sailing medal.

The Finn Olympic sailing trials brought out a strong contingent of older sailors that hoped for light airs and normal conditions off of the OC. The weather varied from light and almost no wind to strong Santa Ana winds to everything in between. This pushed some of the older lighter contenders down in the results and rewarded one of the strongest Finn sailors in the US Zach Railey with a first place win. Zach Railey gave credit to the top finishers and his coach in pushing him to his qualifying for the Olympics in China on 08/08/08, a special date in Chinese philosophy.

In the older group much older Finn sailor Henery Sprague finished sixth, Henry must have been sailing Finns before Zach Railey was even born. Some of the other older sailors that showed up and placed well in the fleet of 42 boats were: C.
Raab in seventh, R. Ramming tenth, Tad Springer 15, Don Jesberg from San Francisco came in 20, George Twist placed 22, Bill Bissell was 25, Peter Connally 27 and Mike Arrigo in 31. This was a great example of how old guys can go out and have a great time sailing against the best in the US.

The Finn is one of the hardest, most demanding single handed boats to compete in the Olympics. If the winds come up it takes someone in very good condition that weighs enough to hold them down. The older group was hoping for light westerly wind off of Orange County combined with their local knowledge to give them an advantage and give them a chance to place high in the results. The week of the Finn Olympic sailing trials brought a wide variety of conditions that were unusual for Southern California. At the end of the week Zach Railey was chosen as the best candidate to go to China for the Olympics in the Finns.

Newport Beach Film Festival Showcasing over 400 Films

The Newport Beach Film Festival is about to have its best year ever. One reason this year is going to be special is the celebration of John Wayne’s one hundredth birthday. John Wayne moved to California from Iowa around 1915 when he was just a young boy. It was while he lived in Iowa that he picked up the name Duke which was his dog’s name. He preferred it over his real first name Marion. He lived in the Mojave Desert with his family in poverty until they finally gave up trying to be farmers and moved to Glendale. Fortunately for Wayne his father taught him football which earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern California playing tackle.

At the recent press briefing on his former boat, the Wild Goose, (see My Entertainment News video) his son Patrick Wayne, shared the story of how his famous father damaged his shoulder body surfing one summer. The shoulder kept Wayne from playing football and he dropped out of USC and started working at the studio full time. That is where he met John Ford who started using him on films. Good thing for all of us because John Wayne had planned to be a lawyer.

For most of his life John Wayne lived in Newport Beach and moored his boat there when he was not cruising on it. This year the Newport Beach Film Festival will show a number of his films and have a special awards night. Along with the films a number of filmmakers, co-stars, friends and family will be circulating and sharing John Wayne stories.

Co-founder of the Newport Beach Film Festival, Gregg Schwenk, told us that this year will also be the biggest turnout of celebrities. One of them that should be on the red carpet for opening night will be Chad Lowe who directed “Beautiful Ohio.” Another big star from the hit TV show “Heroes” that is supposed to come down from Los Angeles is Hayden Panettiere for the screening of her new film “Shanghai Kiss.” More on these in later news stories.

Gregg Schwenk shared the hot tip with us that the best night is opening night. Stars, a red carpet, the premiere of a big film and then a huge party to launch the Newport Beach Film Festival that will have fifteen Orange County restaurants, a hosted bar and a lot of glamour.

Festival of Whales | Dana Point California

The majestic migration of the California Grey Whale is being celebrated at a festival in Dana Point. Here is Gerry Grant with My Entertainment News reporting from the Festival of Whales in Dana Point, Orange County, California.

Every year the California Grey Whale passes by this seaside community on their annual trip from Alaska to Baja California to give birth and mate. The residents here believe this is a perfect reason to have one of Southern California’s largest seafaring celebrations.
