"So you think you can dance" Week 4 - performances

This week marks the 4th week of "So you think you can dance". So far the competition has been going pretty well, there are some definite front runners and America has gotten it right about the bottom 3. This week, the producers decided to make a change in their lineup. Usually they wait until there are only 5 couples left to go to 2 dances per couple. This year, they did it with 7 couples left, 2 weeks sooner!

As a reminder, last week was the first time that parts of a couple were eliminated (Chris and Chelsea were eliminated), leaving their partners to be paired this week (Comfort and Thayne). Tonight, they danced together for the first time (they went 2nd and 9th) you can read my thoughts on the new pairing below….

On a side note….Cat is usually dressed fairly well (she has her wierd moments)…but tonight? Really? Who decided that was the right outfit/hair? She looks like a 60's pinup girl mixed with a penguin!

Couple #1 & #8: Jessica & Will

  • Jive: Judges liked it - they saw they were at least fighting for it. But, she looked confused through beginning, and finally caught up in the middle. Some of the lifts were pretty impressive (over the back and through the legs!?!), but they may be at risk…
  • Lyrical Jazz: Judges review: Jessica is holding Will back. They loved the overall routine and as individuals they liked him, but weren't as happy with her. Their routine was a vertical version of a horizontal act - Will danced the entire thing shirtless! Their first routine wasn't great, but this one was may have just saved them. We shall see…

Couple #2 & #9: Comfort & Thayne (their first time performing together)

  • Broadway: Judges like the new pairing, and gave them a good review (except for Nigel!). For me, the dance routine was much better than expected, but I agree with Nigel - it could have been better. The choreography was taken from West Side Story, and they didn't really do it justice. On a positive note, Comfort certainly cleaned up well and the two of them had better chemistry for sure! I give them a 50/50 right now
  • Smooth Waltz: Overall the dance was good (the judges liked it, and Mary - the expert - thought it was really well done) but I don't think it wasn't enough to save them from the bottom three…

    Couple #3 & #10: Kourtni & Matt

  • Hip-Hop: Absolutely tragically horrid. They looked like they had popped an Ambien (even Nigel said it looked like 'Hip-hop on sleeping pills'). Not a single one of their movements hit the way it should have, and it was down right boring. Judges weren't as harsh as me (go figure ) but they were not happy with it either. If I were them, I'd be preparing my solo…
  • Mambo: It was better than their first (although that isn't saying much!) and the judges gave them a hot & cold review. They had a few great moments, but together? They weren't that in tune, and they didn't get down and dirty. Final point? They'll be in the bottom 3.

    Couple #4 & #11: Mark & Chelsie

  • Jazz: Judges gave it great reviews - Mary yelled & Nigel thanked them for showing everyone else how to do it! They looked like they were having a blast, the choreography was really fun and very flirtatious. They really are a great pairing…their chemistry is great…they'll be safe for sure!
  • Foxtrot: The choreography, the costuming, the everything - it was the first foxtrot this season that impressed the judges and me! No question - they are safe.

    Couple #5 & #12: Kherington & Twitch

  • Pasa Doble: Judges gave good, but mixed reviews: they liked Kherington from the beginning, but thought Twitch didn't 'get it' until the middle! I thought facial expresssions were killer and the dancing was even better! they really got into the mood, and the costuming was great. They are contenders for sure…
  • Contemporary:  I was blown away! It was absolutely heartwrenchingly beautiful. Twitch redeemed himself for sure. It was just incredible. The judges gave them 'awesome! x 6' and they were on Mary's 'hot list'. Nigel claimed Mia Michaels based it on him and her (he was full of it tonight!) Again - they'll live to see at least another week.

    Couple #6 & #13: Katie & Joshua

  • Contemporary: Katie's hair..OMG…it is sooo big - a gigantic pouf on her head, and slicked back into a ponytail on the sides! But onto the dancing, Judges gave them great reviews, loved everything about their performance. They proved why they are still here, and have never been in the bottom 3. They performed the way that the judges, and I, wanted to see. It was beautiful.
  • West Coast Swing: The judges thought it was great and they executed it really well. I tought It was fun, lighthearted and cute. It wasn't fabulous - but their first performance was so incredible and this one was still really good, so they'll be safe.

    Couple #7 &14: Courtney & Gev

  • Hip-Hop: Um - first thought? The NY Giants jersey's they wore were a blantant promotion for Eli Manning. Second thought? It was good - but almost too 'pop' for me, bouncy instead of hitting, happy instead of hard. Courtney definitely outdanced Gev. Judges had mixed reviews, but did like it overall (Nigel said Courtney looked like 'Cinderella getting ugly' - not sure what that means…but ok.)
  • Broadway: Judges liked it - thought their performance was believable and dynamic - but weren't completely ecstatic. I thoguht it was fun and clever and creative and was really well performed and choreographed. We'll see them next week to dance again

    My bottom 3 predictions:

    1. Kourtni & Matt (their lack of power in their hip-hop routine really did them in)
    2. Comfort & Thayne (even new pairing couldn't save them)
    3. Jessica & Will (Everyone else just did better, so they're in it by default)
